Our original business was established in 1987 by George Nardell, who was originally ( and still is ! ) a Chartered Accountant. In 1989 George was joined by David Lamacraft, and Exeter Micros Ltd. was formed to run the enlarged business, which at first traded as a general PC Dealer with special interests in Accounting Software, PC Networks and specialist bespoke software development, but also supplying computer hardware, software and consultancy to local businesses.
George and David are still the current owners, and out of the dozen-plus PC firms around in the 1980’s, Exeter Micros is the only one remaining.
In 1995 we had a request from Devon County Council, already a bespoke software Client, to develop prototype software ( at that time almost completely unspecified ) for their County-wide Community Meals Service. This proved a great success and the initial software release was quickly rolled out to fifteen sites around this very rural county, where it still flourishes today.
During the development of Devon’s software, and arising from conversations with other Local Authorities, we realised that whilst there was likely to be a substantial demand for similar meals software in other areas, the reality was that they would almost certainly all have differing requirements.
We therefore deliberately designed the original software in a modular fashion using a software tool that enabled rapid and far-reaching changes to be made around a core product in which the fundamental, tried and tested financial core modules would not be compromised, and in such a way that structural changes reflecting changed and enhanced system requirements can be distributed to end-user sites without any adverse impact on existing data within the system.
As more and more local authorities started to benefit from the use of our meals software, we decided to give it an instantly recognisable Name, and came up with SMARTT, which acronym stands for :
Smart Meals Administration, Recording and Transaction Tracking
Towards the end of the 1990’s we started to get requests from Commercial Meals Contractors for adapted versions of SMARTT to handle extended facilities they required, and we now have many different versions of the software available, amongst which we can generally find something to suit everybody !
This side of the business has now developed to the point where it accounts for most of Exeter Micros’ current workload & planned future development.
A principal requirement in the initial specification for “SMARTT” was that it should be intuitive to learn, easy to use, and should never require the input of any given piece of data more than once. All our users to date have commented extremely favourably on the “user-friendliness” of the package, and we have quickly trained up several “mature” users without any previous PC Experience who again have commented very positively on its ease of use.
We now consider SMARTT to be the foremost Windows Software Solution for a Community Meals Service which can run on standalone or networked PC’s and has in every single case proved itself to be easy to learn, user-friendly, intuitive, fast, flexible and totally customisable to user-specific requirements – whether to meals service delivery staff or supporting clerical and finance staff. Our ongoing development programme responds to user requests and suggestions, and ensures that it remains the foremost solution for this very specialist market.
We hope that after our presentation to you of the SMARTT solution, your Meals Service will also decide to “GET SMARTT"!
